Alte Feste: Witness to Windhoek's Colonial Past Guide
The Alte Feste, meaning "Old Fortress" in German, is a prominent historical landmark in Windhoek, Namibia. It serves as a powerful reminder of the country's colonial history and offers visitors a glimpse into the past. The fortress is a simple yet imposing structure, built to provide a defensive stronghold during a turbulent period. Today, it houses part of the National Museum of Namibia, showcasing exhibits related to Namibian history and culture. Construction of the Alte Feste began in 1890, commissioned by Curt von François, the commander of the German Schutztruppe (colonial troops). It was initially intended to serve as the headquarters for the troops and a symbol of German authority in the region. Over the years, the Alte Feste witnessed various historical events, including the German-Herero Wars. After World War I, South Africa took control of Namibia, and the Alte Feste continued to serve as a military base. In 1957, it was proclaimed a National Monument. Visitors to the Alte Feste can explore the historical exhibits within the museum, learning about Namibia's colonial past and the struggles for independence. The courtyard offers a peaceful space for reflection, and the views of Windhoek from the fortress are quite impressive. The Rider Denkmal (Equestrian Statue), although controversial due to its colonial symbolism, was formerly located in front of the Alte Feste but has since been relocated to the National Museum. The Alte Feste is located in the city center and is easily accessible by taxi or on foot if you are staying nearby. Several local bus routes also pass close to the Alte Feste. Look for buses heading towards the city center or the Parliament Gardens area. From Independence Avenue, it's a short walk.
